Each mini split outdoor unit needs a dedicated circuit — typically 20A or 30A, 240V for units over 12,000 BTU. Open your electrical panel and count available breaker slots. If the panel is full, you'll need a sub-panel ($300–$800 installed) or a tandem breaker if your panel accepts them. This is the most common hidden cost in mini split installation. Verify before the installer arrives.

A 100-amp service panel in an older home may not have enough capacity for a mini split plus existing loads (especially with an electric dryer, range, and water heater). A load calculation by an electrician ($100–$200) determines if your service is adequate. If not, upgrading from 100A to 200A costs $1,500–$3,000 and requires utility coordination. The dedicated circuit runs from your panel to a disconnect box near the outdoor unit, then to the unit itself. Measure the distance — longer runs require heavier wire gauge and cost more.
